SAN FRANCISCO, California — A second body has been recovered following a deadly boating incident in the San Francisco Bay near Alcatraz Island, according to the San Francisco Police Department.
At about 1:02 p.m. Thursday, officers with the department’s Marine Unit were conducting sonar scans when a passing vessel alerted them to a body in the water west of Treasure Island. Officers recovered the body, and the individual was pronounced dead at the scene.
The recovery comes two days after a 50-foot pleasure boat carrying about 20 people capsized near Alcatraz Island during what officials believe was a memorial gathering. One person, later identified as 79-year-old Clifford Joseph Boisa of Sutter County, died after being pulled from the water, while 16 others were rescued.
Boisa was a former reserve deputy with the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office, where he served from 1987 to 2001.
The U.S. Coast Guard continues to investigate the incident.
