After two toddler boys died from a possible drug overdose inside their family home in the Hyde Park neighborhood of South Los Angeles, their grieving family sought answers this week, saying there were no drugs inside the house.
NBC Los Angeles first reported Thursday that toxicology testing is underway for the twin toddlers, Atlas and Sebastian Carbajal, after the 1-year-olds were found dead at the home on South Victoria Avenue near Crenshaw Boulevard on Monday.
The boys’ deaths are being probed as a possible drug overdose, law enforcement sources told NBCLA. Multiple sources said they believe fentanyl may have been involved.
However, the toddlers’ aunt said the family is struggling to understand their death while calling her nephews “sweet, innocent babies.”
“There’s no fentanyl in the house,” the relative, who declined to be identified, said. “We’re clueless. Just like everybody else, we don’t know. But I know there’s no drugs. no nothing here. Nothing.”
The relative explained the twins’ mother is feeling “infinite pain” and hurting as friends and family are coming together to console one another.
“We’re going to take it day by day,” she said.
LAPD detectives interviewed the twins’ family members and released them for further investigation, the department said.
The autopsies on the boys were complete, but their release is postponed until toxicology reports are available, allowing the LA County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine a cause and manner.
