The Fresno Chamber of Commerce has issued a statement responding to a promotional video for September’s “State of the County” event starring Fresno County Supervisor Garry Bredefeld.
Scott Miller, president and CEO of the Fresno Chamber of Commerce, said in a statement that a number of members reached out with concerns about the video.
Miller said the State of the County event is never intended to be political.
“The goal of the event is to honor the work of local government and to highlight individuals including first responders, long-serving county workers, and others who go above and beyond the requirements of their job to serve the community,” Miller said.
He added that the chamber does not typically involve staff members directly in the production or content of the videos, but that they are paid for through sponsorships of the event.
On July 15, the County of Fresno posted an action-movie-style video on its Facebook page promoting ticket sales for the event. The video features Bredefeld firing guns, running toward a helicopter, flying in a small plane, riding on a boat, pointing a gun toward the camera while standing in the top hatch of an armored vehicle and running outside the Fresno Convention Center. He is accompanied in one clip by Supervisor Nathan Magsig.
The video is set to high-paced action-movie-trailer music. At the end, Bredefeld says “Have a nice day” to a human silhouette paper target with bullet holes forming a smiley face.
Bredefeld defended the video in an interview with ABC30 Action News, describing it as a tribute to law enforcement. He told the station the $7,000 video was paid for entirely by the Fresno Chamber of Commerce and that no overtime was used by the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.
Asked whether the video was a good look for the chairman of the board, Bredefeld told ABC30: “Absolutely, I love guns, and I also believe people should get CCWs and exercise their Second Amendment right.”
Bredefeld said a longer version of the video will be shown during the event. The luncheon is scheduled for Sept. 24.
