Committing to Fresno State just felt like the right decision for Central East wide receiver Bayon Harris.
A big reason was his relationship with Bulldogs wide receivers coach DelVon Hardaway, who has made recruiting and retaining top Fresno-area talent a priority.
Harris joins a growing group of local commitments that includes RJ Jefferson, AJ Williams and Demaje Riley, all of whom have embraced the opportunity to stay home and play in front of family and friends.
“He’s connected to the program,” Harris said of Hardaway. “He knows all these guys. Just talking to him and seeing what I can learn from him made a big difference.”
Harris played a pivotal role in Central East’s Central Section and Division I-A championship run last season. In the Bengals’ 42-28 victory over Pacifica in the title game, he totaled 173 receiving yards and a touchdown.
The 6-foot-3 receiver said he is fully committed to Fresno State despite holding offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado State, Montana State, Northern Arizona, Oregon State, San Diego State, Sacramento State, San Jose State, Texas State and Washington State.
A favorite target of Central East quarterback Jelani Dippel, Harris expects to bring that same big-play ability to the Bulldogs, regardless of who is under center when he arrives at Fresno State.
His biggest takeaway from meeting the coaching staff was how welcoming they were.
Harris also wants to help build on the momentum Fresno State has established under head coach Matt Entz, who guided the Bulldogs to an Arizona Bowl victory over Miami (Ohio) in his first season.
“They have a goal,” Harris said. “They’re building toward that. When I get to Fresno State, I’m going to work.”
