New California law allows separate sales of some ADUs
California’s AB 1033, a new law, allows certain accessory dwelling units (ADUs) to be sold separately, with one of the first sales taking place in San Jose this month.
ADUs are another unit on a property where people can live.
Housing analyst and realtor Shamoot Kishore joined KCRA 3 to discuss what this development could mean for the state’s housing crisis.
He said the law was created to give homeowners more flexibility.
“It’s not the silver bullet to solve the housing shortage that we have in California, but it’s now a new element in the market where we have the chance of increasing supply without having to go through building costs, permits and all those kinds of factors,” he said. “So it allows homeowners to provide that inventory for those densely populated cities.”
