Big rig crashes into Sacramento County elementary school while class was in session, officials say
A big rig crashed into a Sacramento County elementary school Wednesday morning while class was still in session, officials said.
The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District said it got a call around 11:20 a.m. about a crash involving a passenger vehicle and a big rig.
Initial information Metro Fire said it received indicated that the big rig tried to avoid hitting the other vehicle—a white sedan— by making a sharp evasive turn, but the big rig instead left the roadway, hit a sound wall and then crashed into Anna Kirchgater Elementary School.
Firefighters who responded found the big rig driver trapped inside the cabin, so Metro Fire said crews worked quickly to pull the driver to safety. The driver was taken to a hospital with unknown injuries.
Metro Fire said school was in session but that no students, teachers or staff were hurt. The driver of the sedan was also not hurt.
Photos shared by Metro Fire show the cabin of the big rig did partially make it through the school wall. There also does appear to be damage to the rear bumper of the sedan.
Towing crews have already cleared both vehicles from the scene.
The Elk Grove Unified School District, of which Anna Kirchgater is a part, said that no students and staff were in the area where the crash happened.
“Our staff responded immediately, following established safety procedures, and emergency responders quickly arrived on scene to secure the area,” Elk Grove Unified said in a letter to families. “The affected portion of the building has been isolated while it is assessed for safety.”
