FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — Pinedale Elementary School suffered $100,000 worth of damage from a fire caused by illegal fireworks on Sunday.
Fresno firefighters responded to the school after reports that the playground was on fire at around 5:30 p.m.
Crews quickly extinguished the flames, but the fire still caused extensive damage to playground equipment.
The estimated cost to replace the damaged equipment is nearly $100,000.
After an investigation, it was determined the fire was caused by unsupervised juveniles playing with fireworks.
No injuries were reported.
Fire officials said the incident is a reminder that fireworks should only be used responsibly and under the direct supervision of an adult. They warned that reckless behavior involving fireworks can lead to citations, criminal charges and significant financial consequences, and that in many cases parents or legal guardians may also be held liable for damages caused by their children.
