Oakland firefighters honored for saving pigeon that suffered smoke inhalation

(KRON) — The Oakland Fire Department is being recognized for saving a pigeon that was suffering from smoke inhalation.

The group PETA, or People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, is awarding the department with a Compassionate Fire Department Award. PETA uses the award to recognize firefighters who demonstrate exceptional kindness and compassion in rescuing or helping animals in distress

Viral video shows the July 12 rescue. According to reports, the bird approached firefighters, appearing to seek help after suffering from smoke inhalation caused by a car fire. The first responders gave the bird oxygen through a mask before the bird safely flew away.

“This brainy bird knew exactly where to turn for help, and Oakland’s firefighters didn’t hesitate to provide lifesaving assistance,” PETA founder Ingrid Newkirk said in a release. “PETA urges everyone to follow the Oakland Fire Department’s kind example and never turn away from an animal in distress.”

PETA says it will send the Oakland Fire Department a framed certificate, along with vegan chocolates.
