Re “Colorful (and illegal) Comic-Con building wraps take over downtown San Diego” (July 21): Every year it boggles my mind to think that this cash-strapped city, one that will use any opportunity to claw money from its residents with ludicrous schemes and fees, does not have the foresight to allow and charge hotels and businesses a fee to wrap their buildings for Comic-Con. What a missed lucrative opportunity for the city!

Rather than charging illegally wrapped buildings the city fine of $10,000 a day, the city instead gives them a $1,000 “warning.” I’m sure if given the opportunity, businesses would jump at the chance to wrap their buildings with attention-grabbing art.

What a colorful and exciting area downtown would be, and what a huge missed opportunity to bring in revenue for the city and also embrace Comic-Con (for as long as we are lucky enough to have it).

If the law allows for $10,000 fines per day, why is the city not collecting? 30 wraps times $50,000 for 5 days is $1.5 million. Sounds like an easy way to help keep the beach bathrooms open, and we know the entertainment companies can certainly afford it.
