Assessing Your Options for Senior Care

Thursday, July 30, from 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. Join Dr. Gus Fernandez, PharmD, and community liaison at Senior Helpers San Diego County for this informative talk designed to help individuals and families navigate the many choices available for aging adults. The discussion explores different levels of care including in-home support, assisted living, and memory care while offering guidance on evaluating care needs, lifestyle preferences, and long-term planning.

Line Dance for Fun & Fitness

Tuesday, Aug. 4, from 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. We’ll take things step-by-step as you learn simple, easy-to-follow line dances set to familiar, feel-good music. Each routine is taught slowly and clearly, with plenty of repetition so everyone can feel confident and comfortable. Instructor Heather Leon brings over 40 years of dance experience, holds a B.A. in modern dance choreography from UCLA, and is also a Certified Pilates Master with 30 years of teaching experience. This class meets the first Tuesday of each month. The $20 class fee is paid directly to the instructor.

Mindful Awareness & Healing Practice (MAHP)

Wednesdays Aug. 5, 12, 19, 26 and Sept. 2, 9, from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Offered in collaboration with the UC San Diego Stein Institute for Research on Aging, this six-week class combines breathwork, gentle movement, and mindfulness to support physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Similar to practices like Tai Chi, MAHP is designed to help reduce stress, improve physical ease, support mobility, and encourage emotional balance. Led by Kelli “Kai” Silva, PhD, a mindfulness educator and meditation facilitator with over 20 years of experience. $60 for the six-week series, or $15 per class for drop-ins. Fee is paid directly to the instructor.

Paint, Create, and Connect

Wednesdays Aug. 5 and19, from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. – Artists are invited to bring their own supplies and work independently while enjoying the company, encouragement, and informal mentorship. Participants may paint, sketch, draw, or create in the medium of their choice in the outdoor art studio or in our beautiful garden area. All skill levels and all mediums are welcome.

Think Before You Click: Avoiding Online & Phone Scams

Tuesday, Aug. 11, from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m.  Join Dylan Willis from Senior Tech Connect for an informative presentation on how to recognize and avoid common online and phone scams. Dylan will discuss the tactics scammers use, ways to better protect your personal information, and practical tips for staying safe. Attendees will also learn how to add themselves to the Do Not Call Registry to help reduce calls from legitimate solicitors.

The Nurse’s Honest Guide to Living Longer, Better

Thursday, Aug. 13, from 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. Caroline Kerr, RN, has spent 10 years in cardiac nursing, 6 years as a case manager in acute rehabilitation, and founded a mobile wound care program in New Mexico. Her experience was matched by something more personal: years spent as primary caregiver for her father through his journey with dementia. That combination of clinical expertise and lived experience is what shapes “The Nurse’s Honest Guide to Living Longer, Better,” an event of live demonstrations, myth-busting, and straight answers about aging well — the kind of honest, practical guidance you won’t get in a 15-minute doctor’s visit.

ONGOING CLASSES

Open Play Mah Jongg

Each Monday, from 10 a.m. – noon. Enjoy a friendly game of beginner American Mah Jongg, a tile-based game that is enjoyed by individuals throughout the world! A basic understanding of the tiles and rules is required. Seating is first come, first served. Players are responsible for organizing tables and groups; the Senior Center cannot arrange seating or table assignments.

Texas Hold’em Poker for Beginners

Each Monday, from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.  This fun, beginner-friendly class teaches the fundamentals of Texas Hold’em, giving you the confidence to join a friendly game. Instructor George Bullette, Senior Center board president, brings years of poker experience and will guide you through basic rules and strategies in a real game setting. This class is full—please call to be added to the waitlist.

Open Play Chess and Backgammon

Each Tuesday, from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. Come and enjoy a friendly game and get a great workout for your brain! All levels of players are welcome. Tables and playing pieces are furnished. A basic understanding of each game is required. Seating is first come, first served. The Senior Center cannot arrange seating or table assignments.

Chair Yoga

Each Thursday, from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Chair Yoga is a type of yoga that is modified to allow participants to perform all exercises seated. Instructor, Peggie Moore, is passionate about working with students of every age, size, shape and ability. There is a $10 fee per class paid to the instructor. The first class is free.

Conversational Spanish

Each Friday, Beginner 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. and Beginner/Intermediate 1 p.m. – 2 p.m.  ¡Hablemos en Español! Jeannette Caruth learned Spanish solely through conversation and invites you to become more familiar with the language. Each class is a one-hour adventure of hearing and speaking another language. Designed for learners comfortable with the basics of Spanish and are ready to take their skills further. There is a $10 fee per class paid to the instructor.

ONLINE PROGRAMS

Restorative Meditation with Kelly Dubowski, MSN, RN

Each Thursday, from 2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.  A gentle, supportive practice for relaxation and renewal, open to all experience levels. Kelly is a holistic nurse and coach with expertise in behavioral health and trauma-informed care. To join live on Zoom, email hopewithkelly@gmail.com at least 60 minutes in advance. Suggested donation: $10/class (pay what you can — no one turned away).

Interested in a Coin Club?

A local senior is exploring whether there is community interest in forming an independent Coin Club for those who enjoy coin collecting, learning about the hobby, and connecting with others. To express interest, please contact Marty McGee at geemc972@gmail.com.
