An Oakland County resident is in custody after he allegedly shot and killed a 23-year-old man at a block party in Pontiac on Saturday night, according to deputies.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting took place on the 80 block of Mariva Street, in the area of Auburn and Woodward avenues, a few blocks from Pontiac City Hall.

According to the sheriff’s office, multiple people called 911 to report a man had been shot during the party attended by approximately 100 people. Callers told the dispatcher the victim was left unresponsive on the ground.

Sheriff’s deputies, the Waterford Regional Fire Department and STAR EMS responding to the scene encountered a large crowd and numerous vehicles in the area.

“After making their way through the crowd, deputies located a 23-year-old Waterford Township man suffering from a single gunshot wound to the head and immediately began rendering lifesaving aid,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

According to the release, personnel from the Waterford Regional Fire Department and STAR EMS arrived moments later and assumed advanced lifesaving measures before transporting the victim to McLaren Oakland Hospital. However, the victim was pronounced deceased.

While deputies worked to secure the scene, a 23-year-old Pontiac man identified himself as the individual responsible for the shooting. He told deputies that he was a licensed Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL) holder.

Deputies saw a handgun equipped with an extended magazine protruding from the man’s waistband. He was taken into custody without incident, and the firearm was secured as evidence, authorities said.

Investigators did not state a possible motive in the shooting.

The suspect was lodged at the Oakland County Jail pending review of the investigation and authorization of charges by the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office.

Detectives responded to the scene along with members of the OCSO Forensic Science Laboratory and an investigator from the Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office to process evidence and continue the investigation. The Medical Examiner took custody of the deceased, and an autopsy has been scheduled.
