A large California family vacationing in Maui says they were violently attacked by a group of people while on private property at a luxury beachfront resort.
The July 17 incident occurred around 10 p.m. at Kaanapali Alii resort in Lahaina, where Maui police responded to reports of a disorderly gathering involving about 30 people, Hawaii News Now reported.
Responding officers reportedly found 10 to 15 people still at the scene, several of them with visible injuries, according to the Maui Police Department.
Several members of the family group, ranging in age from 11 to 85, told police they were in the resort’s pool and barbecue area when they were violently overwhelmed by a large group of juveniles, some of whom were throwing chairs and beating defenseless people.
One man suffered a deep head wound after allegedly being struck with a chair, requiring 13 staples during a hospital visit, according to Hawaii News Now. Several other relatives were treated for injuries by paramedics at the scene.

The family believes the attack was racially motivated and is asking police to investigate the incident as a hate crime.
Authorities have not announced that the incident is being investigated as a bias-motivated crime, nor have officials publicly confirmed the family’s allegations regarding racial remarks.

The violence appears to have started when an unidentified man ran toward the family and asked for help while being chased by several young males. Investigators said the group then allegedly began assaulting people in the pool area, according to Hawaii News Now.
A 20-year-old man from Makawao was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault but was later released pending further investigation.
Police said the case remains active.
The Kaanapali Alii resort said in a statement to SFGATE that it is cooperating with law enforcement and remains committed to the safety and security of its guests.
