An early Sunday morning fire in a house on Libby Hill Road in Oakland caused substantial damage to the building’s second floor but injured no one.
Five children and two adults were in the home at the time of the fire, which the Oakland Fire Department responded to just after midnight, Fire Chief Dave Coughlin said. The Office of State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire, which originated in a child’s bedroom.
Major Aaron Turcotte wrote in a news release that the fire marshal’s office will release more information when the investigation is complete.
Oakland’s mutual aid fire departments also responded to the fire, coming from Belgrade, Sidney, Rome, Smithfield and Waterville. Coughlin said there were around 30 firefighters on the scene, and that it took until about 4:30 a.m. to clear the blaze.
Firefighters could see the fire on the second floor of the house when they arrived, Coughlin said. It was mostly contained to the second floor and attic.
“From the fire department perspective,” Coughlin said, “it was a pretty good job by the departments that responded to contain it where they did.”
