Authorities on Monday identified a man who drowned over the weekend off the Carlsbad coast.

Robert Edmonston, 53, a Carlsbad resident, was spotted offshore from South Carlsbad State Beach on Sunday, following a daylong search, according to the county Medical Examiner’s Office.

Lifeguards pulled him to shore, where he was pronounced dead shortly after noon, the agency reported.

Edmonston’s death has been ruled an accident, according to the medical examiner.

He had last been seen swimming in the area around 7 p.m. Saturday.
