STEM DAY AND SAINT FRANCIS HIGH SCHOOL IN SACRAMENTO IS CELEBRATING BY HAVING A DAY FILLED WITH SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATH ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS AND THEIR FAMILIES TO EXPLORE. AND THIS EVENT IS REALLY MEANT TO EXPOSE YOUNGER LEARNERS TO ALL THE EXCITEMENT THAT CAN BE FOUND IN STEM. AND TODAY WE’RE JOINED BY ALEXA MENDOZA AND ANGELINE GONZALEZ, TWO STUDENTS AT SAINT FRANCIS HIGH SCHOOL. SO ARE YOU ALL EXCITED ABOUT SATURDAY OR WHAT? YES, WE’RE SUPER EXCITED SINCE SUNDAY IS GOING TO BE THE SUPER FUN DAY ON NOVEMBER 8TH FROM 10 A.M. TO 2 P.M. AND IT’S A REALLY FUN DAY. WE’LL HAVE FREE LUNCH, FREE EXPERIMENTS, AND FREE SHIRTS, AND THIS EVENT IS OPEN TO EVERYBODY, ESPECIALLY MIDDLE SCHOOLERS, BOYS AND GIRLS, AND EVERYONE CAN BE EXPOSED TO THESE EXPERIMENTS THAT WE’LL BE SHOWING TODAY. AND WHAT GETS YOU EXCITED ABOUT SCIENCE? IS IT LIKE SOMETHING THAT YOU’VE BEEN INTERESTED IN SINCE YOU WERE A LITTLE KID? YEAH, HONESTLY, LIKE, I FEEL LIKE BOTH OF US HAVE BEEN EXCITED ABOUT SCIENCE EVER SINCE WE WERE LITTLE, BUT I THINK IT’S REALLY THE CURIOSITY AND THE DRIVING. ENGAGEMENT, WHICH IS WHAT MAKES IT SO INTERESTING. AND WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT THAT KIDS LIKE YOU, YOUNG WOMEN LIKE YOU, EXPLORE STEM ACTIVITIES AND ULTIMATELY STEM FIELDS AS THEY LOOK TOWARD WHAT THEY’RE GOING TO BE WHEN THEY GROW UP, QUOTE UNQUOTE. YEAH. SO LIKE STEM TODAY IS ESSENTIALLY A CORNERSTONE OF OUR EVERYDAY LIFE. AND IT’S IN EVERYTHING THAT WE USE AND DO, LIKE OUR PHONES, LIKE CAMERAS, COMPUTERS, ALL OF THAT. AND IF WE GIVE KIDS AND EVERYONE MORE STEM OPPORTUNITIES, WE CAN REALLY PAVE THE WAY TO THE FUTURE. STEM IS THE FUTURE. I’VE ALWAYS LOVED THE EXPRESSION SCIENCE IS EVERYWHERE BECAUSE IT REALLY IS. NOW YOU HAVE BROUGHT IN SOME EXPERIMENTS, EXPERIMENTS TO SHOW US TODAY. WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO BE DOING HERE WITH ALL OF THIS COOL STUFF THAT WE HAVE RIGHT HERE IN STUDIO? WELL, FIRST OFF, WE HAVE OUR FLAME EXPERIMENTS. BUT LIKE ALL EXPERIMENTS, WE ALWAYS WANT TO STAY PREPARED. SO ME AND ALEXA HAVE OUR LITTLE SUITS, BUT WE WANT YOU TO STAY GOGGLED UP TOO. I GOT A GOGGLE UP. THIS IS PROBABLY THE MOST EXCITING PART OF MY DAY, BECAUSE WE WANT TO GO SAFETY FIRST HERE. ARE WE READY? YES. OKAY. DO WE LOOK SCIENCEY, YOU GUYS? YES. OKAY. TOTALLY. WE GOT THIS. ALL RIGHT, SO OUR EYES PROTECTED. YOU ARE GOING TO BE HANDLING ALL OF THE EQUIPMENT HERE. EXPLAIN WHAT THIS EXPERIMENT SHOWS US. YEAH OKAY. SO THIS EXPERIMENT IS OUR DIFFERENT COLORED FLAMES. AND WHAT HAPPENS IS WE USE DIFFERENT METAL SALTS LIKE SODIUM COPPER, BORON AND STRONTIUM. AND ACTUALLY, FUN FACT, SODIUM SALT IS A SALT THAT YOU USE ON POTATO CHIPS. SO WE’LL BURN THESE UP IN ALCOHOL WHICH WILL GIVE US DIFFERENT COLORS LIKE YELLOW, BLUE, GREEN, AND RED. AND WHAT HAPPENS IS THE HEAT CAUSES THE ELECTRONS FROM THE METAL SALTS TO BOUNCE UP AND ABSORB ELECTRICITY. AND WHEN IT CALMS DOWN THE ELECTRICITY, IT TURNS INTO LIGHT. AND THERE ARE DIFFERENT COLORS BECAUSE EACH SALT GIVES OFF A DIFFERENT AMOUNT OF ENERGY. SO ANGELINA WILL SHOW YOU HOW THAT WORKS. OKAY, SO NOW ALL WE NEED TO DO IS DIM THE LIGHTS SO WE CAN SEE OUR FLAMES VERY, VERY CLEARLY. ALL RIGHT. WE WILL HAVE OUR TECH FOLKS DO THAT. LET’S DIM THE LIGHTS. OOH, THIS ALMOST NEVER HAPPENS. SO WE’RE. YOU ALL ARE SPECIAL GUESTS HERE TODAY. GO FOR IT. SO HERE, ALL WE HAVE TO DO IS GET OUR LIGHTER. PUT IT RIGHT HERE. OH, WATCH THE MAGIC HAPPEN. IT’S WORKING, IT’S WORKING. YEAH. WE SEE A LITTLE FLICKER OF FLAME ON THAT ONE ON THE FAR END. OH, THERE’S THAT, THAT SEEING ALL THE. REACTIONS HERE. OKAY, LOOK AT THAT. AND WHOA. AND OOH, LOOK AT THIS. THIS IS LIKE, MORE OF A RED FLAME. AND THIS IS ALL HAPPENING AS AS YOU PREDICTED. OR IS THIS GUY RIGHT HERE SUPPOSED TO BE LIGHTING UP TOO? BUT IT’S NOT WORKING AT THE MOMENT. YEAH, THAT’S THE THING WITH SCIENCE. SOMETIMES. SOMETIMES THINGS DON’T WORK. AND ALL YOU GOT TO DO IS BOUNCE BACK FROM IT. LET’S SEE. I THINK THAT’S WHAT MAKES IT SO FUN. I THINK THAT IS THE KEY TO IT RIGHT THERE. YOU’RE WISE BEYOND YOUR YEARS, BECAUSE IF IT DOESN’T WORK, YOU GO, OKAY, LET’S REVISE. LET’S LET’S FIGURE OUT WHAT HAPPENED THERE AND AND WHAT THE REACTIONS ARE. THIS IS SO COOL. THIS IS THE KIND OF THING THAT FAMILIES CAN COME CHECK OUT AT YOUR NATIONAL STEM DAY EVENT HAPPENING AT SAINT FRANCIS THIS SATURDAY. WE’RE PUTTING THE INFORMATION ON THE SCREEN FOR OUR VIEWERS FRIDAY OR EXCUSE ME, SATURDAY FROM 10 A.M. TO 2 P.M. IT’S A FAMILY FRIENDLY EVENT AND IT IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. THIS IS SUCH A GREAT EXPOSURE TO SCIENCE FOR OUR COMMUNITY, AND WE WANT TO THANK YOU BOTH FOR COMING IN. DO YOU MIND IF I WEAR THESE THE REST OF THE NEWSCAST? IS THAT COOL? YEAH. OF COURSE. OKAY, COOL. RIGHT. THANKS AGAIN AND BEST OF LUCK O
