‘The camaraderie is unbelievable.’ Senior softball players vie for ticket to world championships
Senior Softball-USA Western National Championships in Sacramento area this week
LINCOLN, Calif. —
Seniors are taking to softball fields across the greater Sacramento area all this week as the Senior Softball-USA Western National Championships gets underway.
One-hundred-thirty slow-pitch softball teams, including roughly 40 Sacramento-area teams will participate in the Western National Championships happening at Foskett Regional Park in Lincoln, Maidu Regional Park in Roseville, Sacramento Softball Complex and Hal Bartholomew Sports Park in Elk Grove.
The tournament brings together players from across several western states with 40-to 85-year-old-and-up men’s players and women’s teams in 40-to-60-and-up divisions.
“Nothing better for us than as we age up to be able to still participate in this game of softball,” said Senior Softball-USA director, Anthony Hinojosa.
Considered to be one of the nation’s largest senior slow-pitch softball tournaments, organizers say it showcases the talents of some of the best teams and players west of the Mississippi River.
“You run. You hit. The camaraderie is unbelievable because you meet people from all over the United States,” Hinojosa said.
Tournament play began Tuesday with games happening all day each day through Sunday.

Winners of this week’s tournament will advance to represent the west in the World Championships when the West meets the East in September.
