Box truck falls off I-5 overpass, narrowly missing mother and toddlers
A Sacramento mother and her two toddlers avoided tragedy when a box truck fell from an I-5 overpass, damaging their car and injuring her finger
SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
A Sacramento mother and her two toddlers narrowly avoided tragedy when a box truck fell from an Interstate 5 overpass onto the road below.
“I was really scared and worried about my babies,” Olga Ardelian said.
Ardelian was driving to the store with her children when the incident occurred.
“I was driving to Target with my babies and I heard a loud noise and I saw rocks falling. It was crazy. I was really scared about my babies and then the rocks hit my windshield,” she said.
The box truck plunged from the elevated northbound I-5 transition ramp, landing on San Juan Road below, just seconds after Ardelian’s car passed.
“As soon as we drove past, the truck fell behind us, just a couple of seconds,” Ardelian said.
Officers said the truck driver had hit two cars on Interstate 80 before the vehicle fell from the overpass.
“This piece of rock just flew into my car, and broke my finger and you can see this rock is from the freeway,” Ardelian said.
She explained that she didn’t immediately brake due to the falling debris but believes that decision prevented a tragedy.
“My windshield is broken, you can see that it’s crazy, and the whole car is covered in glass and many scratches, you can see that,” she said.
Ardelian said her new car of only three weeks is totaled, but she walked away with broken fingers.
“It’s really painful. My skin was in not really good condition,” she said.
Despite the ordeal, Ardelian expressed relief that her children were unharmed.
“They started crying, she (daughter) was really afraid, but now she’s okay,” she said.
