WASHINGTON (TNND) — A former staffer of California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom went into detail about an affair she had with him while he was mayor of San Francisco.
The essay was published in Vanity Fair earlier this week by the former staffer, Ruby Rippey.
She details her struggle with alcoholism and her relationship with Newsom when she was his appointments secretary.
“For my former boss, it is a footnote in a longer arc of ascent,” she wrote. “For me, it is the fracture that split my life into before and after.”
Newsom has not denied the affair and admitted the relationship was in 2007.
In his own memoir, he said that he confessed to Rippey’s husband about the affair, describing it as “the briefest of affairs,” according to The Guardian.
Rippey said that she is sober. She did leave her job working for Newsom and went to rehab.
She said that then-District Attorney Kamala Harris during that time gave her advice to take a pause while she was getting pressured to speak out about the whole incident.
“It turns out to be the best advice I receive,” she wrote. “I am newly sober and still inside the wreckage – unable to make sense of anything, let alone speak clearly about it.”
