LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. (TNND) — A 36-year-old California man was accused of bludgeoning his mother to death with a hammer inside his home while she was visiting from Maine.

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office on Monday announced that Safford James Wolfson was charged with one felony count of murder and “one felony enhancement of personally using a deadly weapon.”

Wolfson’s mother was identified as 61-year-old Angela Caprioli.

View PDF“It is heartbreaking to think that someone could so violently end the life of the very person who gave them life,” Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said in a news release. “We will continue to pursue justice for Ms. Caprioli and everyone who loved her.”

Wolfson has publicly identified as transgender in social media profiles, according to the New York Post. The media outlet reported that an X account with Wolfson’s name described the owner as a “trans girl looking for fun in LA,” while another profile allegedly associated with the suspect showed Wolfson wearing dresses, miniskirts, crop tops, and underwear.

Prosecutors have not alleged that gender identity played any role in the killing.

Prosecutors said the Laguna Beach Police Department responded to a home on July 20 around 11 a.m. after Wolfson’s grandmother arrived. She found broken furniture and blood throughout the house, as well as Wolfson lying on the floor covered in blood.

Officers found Angela Caprioli in a bedroom suffering from severe blunt-force injuries to her head and face. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Prosecutors said Wolfson was taken to a hospital for treatment of self-inflicted injuries before being booked into custody.

Wolfson is being held on $1 million bail and is scheduled to be arraigned October 1 at the Harbor Justice Center.

Wolfson faces a maximum sentence of 26-years-to-life if convicted on all charges, prosecutors said.
