Dennis Bruce Ebel

OBITUARY

Dennis Ebel passed away peacefully on March 25, 2026 in Long Beach, California. He leaves behind the thousands of students and others whose lives he touched, supporting and loving them over a lifetime of service to others.

Dennis was born in San Diego, Ca. and adopted at birth by his loving parents William and Caroline Ebel. He was raised there, attending Blessed Sacrament School and graduating from St. Augustine High School at the age of 16 in 1961. Subsequently, he went off to Villanova in Philadelphia where he majored in philosophy and classical languages. He was concurrently enrolled there as an Augustinian friar (seminarian).

After graduating in 1966 and being ordained a priest, he studied in Rome at the Vatican. When he completed his studies, Harvard Divinity School offered him a scholarship which he turned down to attend Julius Maximilius-Universital Wurzburg in Germany. After completing his degree, he stayed there for a few years as a professor.

When he returned to the United States, he served as Associate Pastor at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in his hometown of San Diego. He also served at Our Mother of Good Counsel Church in Los Angeles, while teaching at St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo.

In 1985, Dennis began a new chapter in his life teaching at Jordan High School in Los Angeles, after which he worked as a bilingual advisor for the Los Angeles Unified School District. Upon earning his administrative credential, he took a position as assistant principal at Narbonne High School in Harbor City, Ca. In 1995 he came to Caroldale Learning Community in Carson, Ca. where he stayed until his retirement.

During his retirement Dennis traveled extensively, even teaching and mentoring students in Laos. He also devoted himself to church activities at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Long Beach where he was highly regarded for his kindness and intellect. Throughout his retirement days Dennis maintained contact with friends almost daily. Also, he joined them for weekly lunch dates, often sipping coffee and people watching at the mall.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 East 7th Street., Long Beach, Ca. 90813
