(KRON) — City leaders in San Jose have narrowed down the choices for the renaming of Plaza de César Chávez, and residents are now being asked for their input.
The renaming of the downtown park, located at 194 S. Market St., comes after allegations of sexual abuse against the late labor leader.
The San Jose community is being asked to participate in a ranked choice survey. The five new park name choices include Farmworkers Plaza, Plaza de Quetzalcoatl, Plaza de San José, Plaza del Pueblo and Plaza Park.
San Jose Parks, Recreation, and Neighborhood Services said Friday that the names were generated through community listening sessions and a public name suggestion period.

“The extraordinary response from our community reflects how deeply San Joséans care about this historic gathering place,” Mayor Matt Mahan said in a news release. “Residents shared an inspiring range of names and ideas, and now we’re inviting them to rank the finalists so we can move closer to a name that honors the plaza’s history, reflects our shared values and represents the community it serves.”
Residents can participate in the survey before midnight, Aug. 3. City staff will then review the results and present recommendations to the Parks and Recreation Commission on Sept. 2. The commission’s recommendation will go before the city council, which will make the final decision.
