Long Beach Police: ‘The officer drew his gun, gave him commands and detained him’

July 21 — Disturbance: Fourth party report of an intoxicated subject at a bus stop. Two officers responded. The bus driver said the subject on the bus was not getting off, and this was the last stop on the route. The officers contacted the subject, and he got up and left the bus when they asked him to. The subject said he thought there was one more stop, and he was going to the Long Beach Tavern to drink. He left on foot, limping, heading south.
Disturbance: A male subject was reported to be “tripping” and “beating the s**t out of the bus stop.” The subject was described as barely being able to walk, and wearing a plaid shirt and
a baseball cap. It sounded like a subject the officers had contact with earlier. They searched the area, and could not find him. One officer also checked behind 122 Lake St., where he had been trespassing earlier in the day, but he wasn’t there. The officer also checked both bus stops. and neither appeared to have any damage.
Disturbance: There was a report of a male subject with dreadlocks yelling and laying in the parking lot. Two officers contacted him, and he agreed to move on without incident.
July 22 — Warrant arrest: A male subject reported that he needed an officer there now, or he would shoot someone. Devin A. Newton then called and said that the subject had pulled a gun on him. Four officers responded. Newton was contacted in the office and the subject was in his room.
Newton told one of the officers that the subject pointed a gun at him. While speaking with Newton, the subject came out of his room. The officer drew his gun, gave him commands and detained him. The subject was read his constitutional rights and agreed to speak with the police.
The subject told the officer that Newton was yelling and chasing two girls through the parking lot, and Newton came to his door. Newton took out his C02-powered BB gun and the subject told Newton he would shoot him. He said he was inside his room when this happened.
The subject gave his consent to search his room, and the officers recovered the BB gun. We spoke with several witnesses, and all stated that Newton was the aggressor in this situation.
Newton was taken into custody, as he had several outstanding warrants, and he was transported to the jail. Statements were obtained by all of the witnesses. The case report will be filed with the prosecutor for charging decisions.
July 23 — Malicious mischief: There was a report of a table set up in one of the Culbertson Park baseball dugouts, and there appeared to be a red liquid all over it. The caller believed it may have been blood. An officer checked the dugouts and found a white fold-out table set up that did appear to have a bright red and watery liquid on it. There was also trash all over, and it appeared that people had been hanging out in there and putting graffiti on the benches, as well. It did not appear that this was actual blood. The city crew was informed.
A silver Toyota Camry was reported as being driven erratically, crossing over the center line and slowing down and speeding up constantly. An officer picked up the vehicle and followed the vehicle for some time. He did not notice any erratic driving or reason to stop it.
A concerned citizen pulled up by an officer and advised that there appeared to be a male subject inside McDonald’s who had a gun in his pocket, and he had his hand on it. There appeared to be a smaller child with the subject, as well, and the citizen stated that the subject didn’t appear to be from around here. The officer parked in the area by the parking lot, but did not notice anyone matching the subject’s description, nor were there any more calls about him.
July 24 — Trespass: The owner of Long Beach Chiropractic called to report that someone has been trespassing after hours and has had a fire close to their building. This occurred within the last two days, but they also found a burned lighter/torch in the driveway of the business at the beginning of the week. The owner requested extra patrols in the evenings/nights. The caller said there were also embers under the eaves of the building, and they are worried the business will be burned down.
Officers were asked to please do extra patrols around the business, and notify the caller if anyone is on the premises.
Traffic accident: Caller was in a hit and run collision. The suspect vehicle was a black smaller SUV with an unknown plate. The damage would be on the vehicle’s front passenger side. There are no leads at this time,
July 25 — There was a report of a car parked in the McDonald’s parking lot with a blinker on for a while. An officer arrived and found a black SUV in the parking lot that was running. The driver was passed out, and would not wake up until the officer opened the door. Then she finally woke up and stated that she was having medical issues and provided her Oregon ID. Medix arrived and informed the officer that they dealt with her last night in Astoria, naked and wanting to get morphine. After checking her, they left and McDonald’s staff said she can stay until 7 a.m. She agreed, and the officer left.
A white SUV was parked behind the recycling bins at the Port of Ilwaco, and appeared to have stuff scattered all over. A white male subject in the driver’s seat. An officer contacted a female subject in the vehicle. She advised that she ran out of gas and was trying to have a friend bring her some fuel. She did not have a gas can, or she would have walked over to the port fuel stations and gotten some. The officer advised her to clean up the bags of stuff that had blown off the back of her vehicle.
