In recent discussions about the safety of our roads, there is often a focus on the wrong subject. Drivers, not roads, are the problem.
Let us admit that police presence is limited and many drivers know that the chances of violating a traffic law and getting caught are nil. They probably consider that the cost of getting caught and paying a fine is just the cost of driving.
Every time I drive, I see violations. Speeding (not obeying posted limits), running stop signs, running red lights, illegal passing, just to name a few.
There is a solution: Make the traffic violation fine get the violator’s attention.
Either raise the fine schedule or concentrate on the frequent violators. The first offense fine costs so much. The second offense carries with it double the first amount. The third offense, double that second amount. And so on.
