The forecast calls for some ugly temperatures in the coming days: 103, 105, there’s even a 108 in there.

You know what’s not ugly? Ice cream. Frozen yogurt.

They’re both beautiful inventions that make our mouths and tummies and moods happy.

And while you can always get these summer treats at the old standbys — favorites such as Ampersand in Fresno or Scoops Soups & More in Clovis — there are some newbies that have landed on the local dessert scene.

Here’s a look at the newcomers that have opened scene in the past year or so in the Fresno-Clovis area.

Janel Haas has been selling Jay’s Specialty Ice Cream from her blue truck shortly after graduating from Fresno State more than a decade ago.

She opened her first brick-and-mortar shop in September at 5985 W. Shaw Ave., near Hayes Avenue, west of Highway 99.

The shop offers dozens of flavors, including the popular rocky road, Oreo delight and Red Wave — strawberry ice cream mixed with blueberries and white chocolate chips.

In addition to scoops and cones, there are milkshakes, root beer floats, orange floats with vanilla ice cream and specialty desserts such as banana splits, cheesecake rolls, ice cream nachos and mini pancakes.

The Ice Cream Shop in southeast

The Ice Cream Shop — yes, that’s its name — opened in southeast Fresno in December. It’s in a new building at 2832 N. Fowler Ave., just south of Shields Avenue.

If there was an award for most colorful treats, this place would win it.

Instagram and TikTok fans will get a kick out of the neon sign that says “Feed me ice cream and tell me I’m pretty.” There’s also pink, purple and blue specialty cones.

In addition to ice cream with toppings, you can also get ice cream on a brownie, or between cookies. There’s also gelato, snow cones and milkshakes in a long list of flavors. There are rainbow slushies too.

CREAM (short for Cookies Rule Everything Around Me) has had a location in the Bulldog Plaza near Fresno State at Cedar and Barstow avenues for a while.

The same owners — Amanda Vogel and Gurvinder Sandhu, with a little help from their many children — opened a second location in the spring. This one is in the Pavilion West shopping center at Bullard and West avenues, taking over the former G’s Creamery spot.

Ice cream here is served in between cookies, in tacos made from waffle cones, in several types of cones, and as scoops, sundaes, milkshakes and more.

It’s at 2097 W. Bullard Ave.

Sweet Frog is a self-serve frozen yogurt shop at 1990 N. Fowler Ave., at the southwest corner of Fowler and Shepherd avenues in Clovis.

It’s got 21 flavors and more than 50 toppings available. It has dairy free and no sugar added frozen yogurt options.

The brightly colored shop is kid friendly.

Crème Paris desserts

Crème Paris sells ice cream, milkshakes, slushies, frozen lemonade and other icy treats.

It opened recently at 5677 E. Kings Canyon Road, a few doors down from the FoodMaxx near Clovis Avenue.

There’s a lot more than cold stuff here though. The globally influenced menu includes crepes, matcha drinks, boba, iced Vietnamese coffee, french fries and egg rolls.
