A transient wounded Friday in an officer-involved shooting allegedly robbed a worker at knifepoint and a homeowner in a second robbery before turning a gun on Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies, Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office told reporters Friday.

Deputies escaped injury in the shooting just before 10:30 a.m. in 8700 block of Barracuda Way, in the county’s La Riviera neighborhood.

Sheriff’s spokesperson, Sgt. Edward Igoe, detailed the tense moments in an afternoon briefing with reporters, saying the man first robbed a construction worker before moving to a second home where he took a gun and attempted to rob the homeowner at gunpoint before fleeing on a stolen bicycle, weapon in hand.

“On the dangerous Richter scale, this is going off the edge,” Igoe said.

Both the construction worker and homeowner were not injured.

According to dispatchers’ audio reviewed by The Sacramento Bee, deputies headed to nearby Mackinaw Way, where a witness said a shirtless man was attempting to take a car from the home’s garage.

Igoe said the man led pursuing deputies on Grayling Way before turning onto Barracuda Way where he abandoned the bicycle and squeezed through an opening in a chain link fence separating homes from the rear parking lot of the Glenbrook Shopping Center. It was in the rear lot where the man squared off against deputies, holding a gun at his side. Igoe said the man raised his weapon at deputies before one of the deputies fired, striking him.

In video from a Ring doorbell camera obtained by The Bee, deputies in two sheriff’s cruisers pursued the man, shouting for him to “get on the ground” as he fled aboard the bicycle.

La Riviera resident Rafaela Baldomar was at home as the incident unfolded. She said the deputies’ vehicles raced past before gunshots rang out.

“The police (were) driving so fast, and normally they always stop in this corner to turn around. But the way he was driving, I was like, he’s not gonna stop,” Baldomar said.

“I come out to be curious what’s going on. So then I saw the two cars of cops over there already, and that moment, in seconds, I hear the two shots, and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, they killed somebody!’” she continued. “I went inside, and then I come back again, and I see all these cars coming, ambulances, fire trucks, and all that stuff. And then the place got crazy.”

It was unclear how many times the deputy fired. Igoe said deputies treated the man with a chest seal and tourniquet. The man who was shot was taken to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento for treatment, according to dispatchers’ audio reviewed by The Sacramento Bee.

On Friday afternoon, Igoe said the man was recovering in stable condition following surgery.

The deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave as sheriff’s crime scene investigators and homicide detectives take on the case. Sacramento County District Attorney’s investigators will conduct a parallel probe, standard procedure in officer-involved shooting incidents, Igoe said.
