F-35 crashes in San Diego, sparking fire and leaving jet in pieces near runway
SAN DIEGO —
A fighter jet crashed at MCAS Miramar military base Friday morning.
The F-35 assigned to 3rd Marine Aircraft Group 11 crashed around 10 a.m., and sparked a fire in a field on base, a spokesperson for the military base confirmed.
The spokesperson said the aircraft carried only the pilot, but did not disclose whether there were any injuries.
Footage from SkyRanger 7 showed a plane in at least two pieces amid a football-field-sized patch of scorched earth. It was not immediately clear what caused the crash, which was several feet away from the runway.
