HUDSON VALLEY- A 21-year-old former Cold Spring resident who recently moved to California is being credited with saving a climber who slipped from a cliff and hit the rocks below.
The San Diego-Fire Rescue reported lifeguard Liam Mooney, 21, responded to Pappy’s Point at Sunset Cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean after a man who was climbing the face of the cliff reportedly fell, striking the rocks below.
Mooney, an off-duty U.S. Coast Guard member entered the water and kept the patient afloat before lifeguard crews aboard jet skis and a rescue boat arrived.
The fire department reported that crews secured the patient and used a cable-haul system to extricate him from the water. He was transferred to medics and transported with traumatic injuries.
Mooney is a former graduate of Haldane High School in Cold Spring.
