California lawmakers return to Capitol to review hundreds of bills

California lawmakers return to the Capitol on Monday after a month-long summer recess, facing a packed schedule to review and pass hundreds of bills before the end of August.

The bills face the next deadline of Aug. 14 to pass out of the Appropriations Committee in the State Senate and Assembly. The Assembly’s Appropriations Committee is scheduled to meet Wednesday to discuss several proposals.

Following the Appropriations deadline, lawmakers will dedicate the final two weeks of the month to lengthy floor sessions where they will debate and vote on the proposed laws. The deadline for each house to pass bills they want to send to Gov. Gavin Newsom is Aug. 31 at midnight.

Newsom has a deadline to sign or pass bills by Sept. 30.

This will be Newsom’s final time signing proposed bills into law, as his current and last term as governor ends in the first week of January.
