Two children under the age of 10 took a car belonging to one of their parents Thursday and later struck a pedestrian in Oakland, leaving her in critical condition, police said.
The collision happened at about 9:30 a.m. in the area of 35th and Mangels avenues, not far from Interstate 580, according to police.
Police said the pedestrian, a woman in her 30s, was taken to a hospital. The two children, who sources said are 6 and 4 years old, were also taken to a hospital and listed in stable condition.
Witness Anthony Hudson said multiple people ran to help the woman, performing CPR until paramedics arrived.
“It was just tragic,” Hudson said.

The kids appeared to be traveling northbound on 35th Avenue when they hit another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction, causing them to lose control and hit the pedestrian as she was walking with a dog in a crosswalk, according to police. Witnesses said the dog appeared to be OK.
Witnesses, shocked at the ages of the children in the car, said the kids were lying on the ground with injuries and appeared to be in shock after the crash.
The parents of the children were cooperating with the investigation. It wasn’t immediately known if alcohol and/or drugs played a role, police said.
An investigation is ongoing.
