In a changing landscape of family homelessness, the image often conjured is misleading. Many families experiencing homelessness do not fit the traditional narrative; they may be living temporarily with friends or family, residing in vehicles, or frequently moving between short-term housing solutions. As rising costs and unexpected life challenges mount, the pressure on these vulnerable households intensifies, pushing them closer to the brink of homelessness.
To address these pressing issues, the Orange County United Way will host a Community Chat on August 28, 2026, from 12:00 to 12:30 pm via Zoom. The event will feature insights from LaVal Brewer, President and CEO of South County Outreach, and Nichole Gideon, a member of the Orange County Continuum of Care Board and the Lived Experience Advisory Committee.
Brewer and Gideon will leverage their extensive professional background and personal experiences to explore the factors that push families toward homelessness and the critical support systems that can intervene before a crisis escalates. They will discuss how listening to those who have faced these challenges firsthand can enhance services and lead to effective solutions.
Participants in the Community Chat will gain a deeper understanding of practical prevention strategies aimed at helping families maintain stable housing and achieve lasting stability.
The event is part of the United to End Homelessness initiative by the Orange County United Way, which focuses on collaborating and advocating to uplift the community and address pressing human needs through strategic programming.
