The 28-year-old man who went underwater for about 10 minutes at Millerton Lake on Sunday died in the hospital, the Fresno County Coroner’s Office said on Monday.

He was identified as Alfonso Garcia Gopar of Madera.

Lifeguards at Millerton Lake responded to the drowning at 5:17 p.m. in the La Playa area of the lake. Park officials initiated a dive line search, and lifeguards located the man about 15 yards from shore after he had been underwater.

Gopar was airlifted to St. Agnes Hospital after CPR was administered, but he later died.

Park officials said he was not wearing a life jacket.
