It’s been a tough summer for restaurants and other food businesses.

Last month, The Bee told you about eight restaurants that were closing, including Hummus Republic’s Fresno locations, Mexican restaurants and a longtime Japanese sushi spot.

Now, even more eateries are closing. And there are some longtime favorites among them in both Fresno and Clovis.

Here’s a look at who closed recently or will soon.

Great Wall Chinese Cuisine, the popular Chinese restaurant near Herndon and Fowler avenues, announced its last day is Monday.

The longtime restaurant is a favorite among locals, often looked at as a go-to place for diners who miss the now-closed Shanghai and Joy Luck restaurants. It opened in 2008 and was known for its chow mein and orange chicken.

Just why it’s closing is a mystery.

Workers declined to comment or pass along a message to the owners. An email to the restaurant was not returned.

A sign on the door said: “We want to thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for your support towards us throughout all the years. Unfortunately, we will be permanently closed after August 10, 2026. Until then, please come and support us during our last weeks of operation!”

The downtown Fresno location of Toshiko Ramen and Sushi Bar at 1112 Fulton St. has closed.

While the restaurant itself has not put out a statement regarding the downtown location’s closure, in the comments of an Instagram video shared to the business’s main pages, a staff member claimed that the downtown location was “no longer sustainable” and thus was closed down.

Toshiko has two other Central Valley locations: one in Kingsburg and one in Hanford.

The Bakery by Indulge Right — extremely popular among the gluten-free crowd — has closed both its locations.

The business specialized in gluten-free baked goods, including donuts, cakes, bread, along with sandwiches and more. It was run by a pastry chef with a gluten sensitivity who had been made sick by the very items he used to bake.

Tuesday, the owner posted on Instagram that he had to suddenly close both locations.

The first location opened in 2022 near Shaw and West avenues. The second opened in The Trading Post shopping center in 2024.

Owner Varouj Kachichian said he could not share details behind the closure, but thanked customers for their support.

The post said in part: “I am deeply saddened and heartbroken to share with you that after 4 years of hard work, sleepless nights, countless hours, and an insane amount of sacrifices invisible to everyone else, I had to make the hardest decision of shutting down both bakery locations permanently, effective immediately. This has been one of the most difficult decisions I have ever made.”

In less than 24 hours, 140 comments were already mourning the loss of their “safe space” on Instagram.

“This is such a bummer! I valued having a place my teen with celiac could go and get anything she wanted. Thanks for an amazing 4 years,” said user kmmr08.

Sierra Nut House has closed its location in Old Town Clovis.

The longtime local seller of gift baskets filled with nuts, dried fruit and other goodies and gifts had been at 756 Pollasky Ave. in Old Town Clovis.

The business recently moved into its new location at Bullard and West avenues, leaving behind its spot in the Villaggio shopping center on North Blackstone Avenue. (It had to leave that location to make way for a second location of Sam’s Deli.)

The Bullard and West store is up and running, and so is the bistro. However, it’s still awaiting its liquor license to serve wine.

The new space is twice as big as the old space.

So the owner decided streamline operations and focus solely on the northwest location. There are no plans to reopen in Clovis, according to the family.

For years, Sierra Nut House had its original location at Sierra and Chestnut avenues. But it closed in 2024 after the land was sold.

Bingo Market, at 2143 E. Belmont Ave. in Fresno, closed at the beginning of July.

Bingo Market was a grocery store that catered to Southeast Asian cuisines, with a special significance to the Hmong community. It also held a deli and a prepared foods section.

The business gave no explanation on its social media pages as to why it closed.

Vampire Penguin, a shaved ice and dessert shop at 1102 E. Champlain Dr. Ste. 108 in Fresno, announced that its last day of business is Aug. 16.

“After an incredible journey, it’s time for us to say goodbye,” read the announcement post on Facebook.

The business shared that it was not renewing its five-year lease, and that the owners have plans to move out of the Central Valley within the next couple of years.

“While this wasn’t an easy decision, we know it’s the right one for our next chapter,” the post said.

Roll-Em-Up Taquitos was open for less than a year before suddenly closing.

The Fresno location at 6451 N. Riverside Drive Ste. 101 opened in December 2025, when the Bee reported on it. The site featured a drive-thru, and was owned by former Fresno State football player Rodney Davis, a running back from Dos Palos.

Roll-Em-Up hasn’t posted anything on its social media page, and the Fresno location is still listed on the franchise’s website, but a sign posted in the window states the restaurant closed down “due to unforeseen challenges.”

The general manager did not immediately return a call seeking comment. A real estate broker handling the space said he is already receiving offers from businesses interested in moving into the spot.
