Sacramento families seek relief from heat in American River
As temperatures soared on Sunday, families flocked to the American River to cool off, enjoy water activities, and create lasting memories.
“Oh man, this is their first time ever coming out to the river, just creating memories for them on a hot day,” Suzanne Zaragosa said while cooling off at the American River.
The heat brought crowds to beaches, lakes, and riverbanks, with many people taking to paddleboards, jet skis, kayaks and boats.
Annette, who spent the day at the river, said, “I was here yesterday and now we’re back today. It depends on the heat and if I don’t have anything else to do, it’s a nice place to be.”

For some, the day on the water was also a chance to enjoy one last summer outing before school begins. “The weather’s really nice. It wasn’t windy here, and it gives my boys an opportunity to get in the water and cool off a little bit before back to school,” said Will Williams, who traveled with his sons from the Bay Area to spend the day on the water.
Williams also emphasized the importance of safety, especially with the fast-moving currents.
“I tether a life jacket to the boat, make them wear it, and then they jump in. I keep it to the boat so they don’t drift away because the current is moving really fast, so you just have to be safe,” he said.
Officials continue to remind visitors that even on hot days, river currents can be strong, and life jackets are especially important for safety.
