The Los Feliz social club, whose members have included Walt Disney and Amelia Earhart marks a century in L.A. with a fancy dress dinner
Every Wednesday for 100 years, the members of the Los Angeles Breakfast Club rise before dawn and amble over to their headquarters in Los Feliz. The non-profit is a rare survivor from the era of big social clubs where regular folks come together for community, camaraderie and fun. This weekend, the club celebrates its centennial with a big fancy evening party at the clubhouse they’ve been using for the last six decades in the shadow of Griffith Park.

After the rituals, songs and calisthenics, the club hosts a different speaker every week. Everyone from actors to astrophysicists has graced the stage. A few weeks ago, Dr. Peter Weller, famous for his role as Robocop, took the stage. He wasn’t there to discuss cyborg crimefighting, but his love of Italian Renaissance art. It’s an eclectic crowd, to say the least.

Saturday’s “dazzling evening of dining, dancing and celebration” at their clubhouse, dubbed the “Shrine of Friendship,” will feature a full buffet dinner, cash bar, photo ops and a live performance by Lil’ Mo and the Dynaflos. The fancy dress ball will also feature a silent auction with prizes donated by members.

And the members! Over the decades, esteemed Angelenos from Walt Disney to Amelia Earhart (to this writer!) have sat atop the club’s sawhorse mascot “Ham,” stuck their hands in egg goo and recited their own oath to join the fun-loving bunch.

The club can be super goofy and amusing but they also run also a charitable foundation that supports the arts and the needy. Members are quick to come to the aid of other members and have formed strong bonds that still connect long after the ham and eggs have been consumed. Celebrate in the evening and maybe you’ll be back in the morning!
