Red bus lanes to be installed in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood Monday night
A four-phase project to install red bus lanes in Oakland starts Monday night, with temporary bus stop closures and changes along Forbes and Fifth avenues.
A four-phase project to install red bus lanes along Forbes and Fifth avenues in Oakland begins Monday night, with temporary bus stop closures planned during the process.
“Anything we can do to help keep them moving is very helpful for everyone,” said Melissa Ruben, director of public relations for Pittsburgh Regional Transit.
During the first phase, the bus stops at Forbes and Craft avenues and Forbes Avenue and Atwood Street will be closed. The project will start at Forbes and Craft avenues and extend to Schenley Drive Extension at the end of Schenley Park.
Ruben explained the steps involved in the installation process.
“The first thing is they’re gonna come through with a street sweeper. They clean off the roadway, remove all the debris, then they take an epoxy coating,” Ruben said. “Then they have a big Shop-Vac-looking tube. That’ll shoot red glass beads onto the roadway, and it kinda embeds into the epoxy.”
The project is expected to take four days. On the second night, the bus stop at Forbes Avenue at Oakland Avenue will be closed, and the stop at Forbes Avenue at South Bouquet Street will be temporarily relocated half a block to South Bouquet Street.
“This is a very significant milestone, and we are excited to see this progress,” Ruben said.
