Their last series wasn’t pretty, but the Houston Astros remain atop the AL West thanks to one of the MLB’s best record since the All-Star break. Tonight, they’re on the West Coast once again as they take on the San Francisco Giants to begin a three-game set at Oracle Park. First pitch is set for 9:45 p.m. ET.
Let’s dive in with a preview, prediction and pick for tonight’s Astros vs. Giants game courtesy of odds and lines on DraftKings Sportsbook.
Astros vs. Giants prediction, preview
The Astros were a good bit below .500 heading into the All-Star break, and they were swept in their first series to begin the second half. However, they’re still 13-8 since that point, good for the sixth-best winning percentage in baseball over the small sample. Now, they remain first in the AL West at 60-59 with a -28 run differential, though back-to-back losses are a bit of a letdown. The competitor this evening is none other than the Giants, who sold at the trade deadline and are just 49-69 on the year with a -63 differential. Their record over the last 10 outings is a paltry 3-7 and they’re 8-14 since the break.
The visitors’ starting arm is an interesting case. RHP Hayden Wesneski (2-0) gets the nod after returning from Tommy John surgery just two starts ago, tossing 11.2 combined innings to start his 2026 campaign. So far, he brings a 3.86 ERA with five earned runs allowed, plus a 1.29 WHIP and eight strikeouts. His velocity is down a tick compared to before the injury last year, and a limited 16.7% K% isn’t good for now. However, his chase rate looks great and his 8.3% BB% is respectable. Houston’s bullpen is also 14th in ERA at 4.00 with a 1.27 WHIP and a 13.7% K-BB%, performing like one of the MLB’s best since the summer began.
Another RHP gets the start for San Francisco as Blade Tidwell (0-0) takes the mound for the second time to open a game this year, marking his 10th appearance overall. He’s tossed just 17.0 innings with a 3.18 ERA, a 1.18 WHIP and 13 strikeouts. The second-year pro is getting his shot as the Giants’ No. 13 prospect and carries a lot 18.8% K% but a nice 5.8% BB% and a stellar 3.9% barrel rate over his own limited sample of work. However, the club’s relief staff sits 21st in ERA at 4.33 with an elevated 1.43 WHIP and a low 8.6% K-BB%.
Now, the Astros do have an edge at the plate. They’re sixth in club OPS at .735 and are one of the best power-hitting teams in the MLB – the .170 ISO ranks fourth and 161 homers are good for third most. Against right-handed pitching, Houston slashes .248/.323/.421 with an OPS of .744. The Giants aren’t bad with their bats per se, still amassing a .715 OPS that falls 17th in the MLB, also ranking 13th in ISO (.159) and 19th in homers (131). Plus, they slash .252/.310/.421 against righties for a .732 OPS, but the concern is real given that the club traded a couple of key pieces away at the deadline.
Astros vs. Giants pick, best bet
DraftKings Sportsbook lists the Astros as a -140 Moneyline favorite on the road this evening, while the Giants enter as +131 underdogs to win at home. The run total is set at eight here.
It’s a bit odd that the run total is as low as it is in this outing. Oracle Park is not a hitter-friendly environment, but weird things can happen when batters drive the ball deep into the outfield gaps. Wesneski hasn’t seen much action coming off his long injury layoff and gets an offense that does hit right-handers well, while Tidwell is young without a ton of MLB experience himself. Sure, his numbers look solid thus far and he went 5.0 innings with two earned runs allowed in his first start against the Rangers last week. However, he’s facing a much more difficult order tonight and is backed by a less-than-stellar batch of relievers.
It may be close, but these aren’t easy arms to trust at the moment and both clubs have some pop with the bats in these splits. I like the over on the run total.
