A massive 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Colombia this afternoon. The tremor was registered five kilometres east of San Jose del Palmar, but was felt across several cities, including Medellin, where buildings were evacuated according to reports on social media.
The death toll currently stands at 70.
The huge tremor struck at a depth of 107 kilometres, the USGS said, and a map from the US institute suggests it was felt as far as Bogota. Pictures and clips widely circulating on social media show people fleeing outside their homes amid the tremor, as well as collapsed buildings.
Around 75,000 British tourists visited Colombia in 2024, marking a significant increase from the 50,000 UK visitors recorded in 2015.
