Five Finger Death Punch founder Zoltan Bathory doesn’t want anyone to get the wrong idea about the heavy rock troupe’s 10th and latest album, “Legacy.”

“If somebody calls an album ‘Legacy,’ it feels like the point of retirement or something, right? It isn’t,” said the Hungarian-born guitarist, who formed FFDP in 2005 in Las Vegas. “This is kind of midway. We called it ‘Legacy’ because this is the 10th record, and we kind of reflected on that, like: ‘Wow, we are around this long? That’s kind of … surreal.’

“At this point, we do have a legacy. We’ve carved our name into the history of hard rock/metal. You hope for the best, dream for the biggest … and it’s even gone beyond that, really.”

There’s no doubt FFDP has made a significant mark since its debut album came out in 2007. Four of its albums have been certified platinum, with another five going gold. It’s also scored 30 Top 10 hits on Billboard’s Rock Songs chart, with 13 hitting No. 1 on the Mainstream Rock Airplay list, including a collaboration with Japan’s Babymetal, “The End,” last year.

“Legacy,” meanwhile, marks a sea change of sorts, the first time since 2009 FFDP didn’t work with producer Kevin Churko. In his place is Drew Fulk, whose credits include Disturbed, Twenty One Pilots, Lil Wayne and Michigan bands I Prevail, We Came As Romans and Pop Evil. “He’s a ninja,” Bathory says, “a wizard.” And, he adds, Fulk — who also co-wrote six of the album’s 10 tracks — was fully on board with FFDP’s intention for the set.

“This is the first time we had a couple of years to write a record, so we wrote a lot of songs, about 30, and decided which group of these worked best together,” Bathory, 48, says. “I think in 20 years, we’ve sort of crystallized the sound of the band, our fingerprint so to speak, and we were very conscious about it here. We wanted it to be a snapshot of where we came from, but also be looking forward a little bit.

“If you ask, ‘Give me one album that represents Five Finger Death Punch the right way and tells me the story of the band,’ this is the one. That was the goal.”
