OAKLAND — A Bay Area man has been charged with 12 felonies, including attempted murder, in a July shooting that targeted a married couple and their three children, according to police.
Tahytus Johnson, 20, was charged with attempted murder, multiple counts of assault with a firearm, child abuse, and unlawful firearm activity, according to court records. He cannot be bailed out of jail, per an order signed by Judge Rozlynn Silvaggio, records show.
Johnson was identified as a suspect from surveillance footage of the shooting, which police say they matched to his Instagram account, @dttg.weez, as well as pictures posted by his younger brother from that day that show him wearing a similar outfit to the shooting suspect. About a half-hour before the July 9 shooting, police say the victim had argued with three women, including two relatives of Johnson.
The five victims were fired at around 1:30 p.m., on the 1900 block of Market Street in Oakland. The couple allegedly pushed their children to the ground to prevent them from being struck by gunfire, and the man retrieved his own pistol, authorities said. There were no reported injuries.
Johnson was arrested on suspicion of murder as a juvenile, but never charged, according to police. His older brother, 23-year-old Taurus Johnson, was already in jail when Tahytus was arrested, facing charges of robbery for allegedly snatching a purse from a woman “with such force that it sent the victim airborne before landing on her back,” last December, records show.
Like his brother, Taurus Johnson was identified as a suspect through pictures from his Instagram, @Bodygzzz.dem, which show him wearing a similar outfit as the robber, according to police. He was also wanted at the time for allegedly cutting off his GPS ankle monitor while on probation for accessory to robbery. He is being held in lieu of $150,000 bail.
From their social media accounts, authorities identified the two brothers as part of a group of local rappers who commonly use the acronym NBS in their stage names. Police allege that the elder Johnson brother is part of an Oakland gang under the same moniker, which stands for “Nobody Safe.”
