On Tuesday, Aug. 4, members of the Long Beach Township Police Department Traffic Safety Unit conducted a specialized traffic detail, dubbed “Cops in the Crosswalk,” to help increase pedestrian safety through enforcement efforts.

“During these details, officers pose as pedestrians crossing in designated crosswalks,” the LBTPD explained in a Facebook post. “Vehicles failing to stop for pedestrians are identified and stopped by a marked patrol vehicle.” Included with the social media post are two videos showing violations; in each video, vehicles failed to stop for a pedestrian actively crossing in a crosswalk on Long Beach Boulevard.

According to the police department, “The ‘Cops in the Crosswalk’ detail is done in addition to details where crosswalks are monitored at various times throughout the day by patrol. As an example of the enforcement efforts, during these details on Aug. 4, 2026, there were 38 traffic stops and one warrant arrest during a span of four hours.

“With the help of the community, we were able to identify several areas where there are safety concerns for pedestrian crossing,” the department added. Those areas of the municipality include: 26th Street and Long Beach Boulevard, 68th Street and Ocean Boulevard, 33rd Street and Long Beach Boulevard, Tract 1065 and Long Beach Boulevard, and Labaia Lane and Long Beach Boulevard, as well as 20th Street and Bayview Avenue in Barnegat Light, which the township police also patrol.

Officers also continue proactive enforcement efforts throughout Long Beach Township and Barnegat Light, with a focus on speeding, failure to keep right, traffic signal and stop sign violations, all other motor vehicle violations, and bicycle and e-bike violations.

“We encourage all motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians to remain alert, obey traffic laws and work together to ensure a safe summer season for everyone,” the LBTPD stated.
