BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Last week, the Inovia Pharmacy on Brimhall Road was broken into for the second time in three weeks.
But the most recent burglary was captured on video with a burglar making his way through the pharmacy.
Cameras captured the suspect breaking into the business by cutting a hole in the wall.
“He did collect some items in one of our trash cans and he shoved it in the hole that he came out of in the wall,” said Yasser Haykal, CEO and pharmacist of Inovia Pharmacy.
The hole in the wall was quickly patched and repaired by Monday.
Haykal said that independent pharmacies are often targeted.
Burglars “are after controlled substances most of the time, not cash, not regular medication, although they may get some random items on the way out,” Haykal said.
The key was literally left in the cash register — but not a single bill was taken, just old medications from the trash. Inovia isn’t alone.
Turns out, break-ins at pharmacies are common, as a pharmacy in Oildale was also recently targeted.
Kinh Tu, a pharmacist with the El Tejon Pharmacy, said they also had a break in about three weeks ago. He said the burglars got away with some expensive items.
“Typically (it) is more of the street value items, like more of the control medications, the the anxiety drugs, the pain medications,” Tu said. “Those typically are the high value item on the street.”
Neither pharmacy was inclined to share what exactly what taken from their stocks, but said doors, gates and alarms haven’t been enough.
