Re “Ministry offers migrants solace: ‘You’re not alone’” (Aug. 10): I appreciated the front-page article but feel it failed to portray the fundamental motivation in this ministry. I am a volunteer in that program. It is not just to accompany and support immigrants who are trying to do the right and “legal” thing by coming to their court and ICE appointments. It is at the core of our understanding of our faith.
We are members of many different faith communities — mine being Christian. There are some 400 verses in the Bible that call for the kind, just and compassionate treatment of immigrants, foreigners and refugees. Hospitality to the “stranger” or “sojourner” is one of the most repeated commands in Scripture. This, I believe, should be the front-page news in a Christian nation, rather than stories of cruel, mean and all-too-often unjust actions to detain and expel immigrants and break up families.
