OAKLAND – A 42-year-old man was shot in an apparent robbery and attempted carjacking early Sunday in East Oakland authorities said. As of Sunday morning, the man was in an Oakland hospital where he is being treated for two gunshot wounds.
The confrontation happened at about 12:53 a.m. Sunday in the 4700 block of E 12th Street and prompted the activation of a gunshot detection alert system. According to initial police reports, the man told officers he was driving westbound when he stopped because of a man on a bicycle who was in the lane. The driver told police the man approached him with a gun and demanded his backpack, which he gave him. The man told police that when the suspect demanded his car keys, he tried to drive away, and the suspect shot him.
The suspect fled on a bicycle with the backpack before police responded. The driver was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
The victim said the suspect, who was riding a white bicycle, was in his late 20s, about 6 feet tall with a thin build and was wearing a red hoodie and reddish colored pants.
