Terra Restaurant and Bar, the rooftop dining venue at Eataly Silicon Valley, was ordered closed Friday after Santa Clara County inspectors found live and dead cockroaches in the restaurant’s kitchen and food preparation areas.
The county Department of Environmental Health suspended Terra’s health permit and ordered all operations to cease, according to an official inspection report dated Aug. 14.
The report says inspectors “found a live cockroach crawling on the wall above the hand wash sink in the kitchen.” It also documented dead cockroaches on the wall above a hand-washing sink in the food-preparation area.
The inspection was listed as a limited inspection of Eataly-Terra Restaurant & Bar, located on the third floor of Eataly at Westfield Valley Fair on Stevens Creek Blvd. in San Jose.

The investigation followed a public complaint alleging rodents at the food facility, according to information from the county.
The county’s report classified the finding as a major violation involving insects or other vermin and assigned the facility a red closure placard.
Terra’s manager told inspectors that pest-control services had been completed the night before and that the restaurant was being cleaned and sanitized. The manager also said potentially contaminated food had been discarded, according to information provided by the county.
Before reopening, Terra must submit a completed reopening checklist and a pest-control report from a licensed provider, the inspection report says. The restaurant must then request a reinspection from the county.
The report lists Aug. 17 as the follow-up date and says violations must be corrected no later than Aug. 28 unless otherwise noted.
The inspection report does not state that the rest of Eataly’s marketplace, shops or other food operations were closed.
