Police said checkpoint locations are selected based on reported impaired driving-related crashes. The operations are intended to increase awareness of the dangers of impaired driving and deter impaired drivers as well as people driving without a valid license.
The department has also reminded motorists that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Prescription and over-the-counter medications can interfere with driving, while driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal despite medicinal and recreational cannabis being legal in California.
