Campbell’s Trevor Gillis and San Francisco’s Stephanie Blankley swam to victories in the non-wetsuit division at the Cruz Cruise in Santa Cruz on Sunday to cap 2026 Open Water Weekend.

The 2-mile swim started at Main Beach, had swimmers go around the wharf and several bouys, and end on Cowell Beach.

Gillis, 51, finished in 41 minutes, 7 seconds. San Francisco’s Jon Christensen  36, took second in 42:12, and was followed by Oakland’s Zebron Lemke, 46, in 42:23. Santa Cruz’s David Lederman, 60, was the top local in 42:42. He took first in his age group and fifth overall.

Blankley, 28, won the women’s title in 45:26. Pleasanton’s Lissi Knell, 32, took second in 46:59, and Menlo Park’s Nancy Prouty, 55, took third in 47:46.

Santa Cruz produced the top three finishers in the men’s wetsuit division. Joel Brennan, 46, won in 44:41. Stefano Profumo, 48, followed in 46:04, and Luc Vantalon, 61, was third in 46:51.

Oakland’s Jeanine Sidran, 52, took first in the women’s wetsuit division in 53:38. Oakland’s Jivana Nagpal, 23, took second in 56:46, and Santa Cruz’s Martha Seaver, 71, took third in 57:15.

Oakland’s Eric Wright and Davis’ Kim Elsbach earned wins in the inaugural  V’s Sea Star half mile swim.

Wright, 53,  finished in 17:29. Santa Cruz’s Dietrich Brandt,  52, took second in 18:19, and San Rafael’s Chris Greiner, 45, was third in 19:55.

Elsbach, 63, took first among the women in 17:54. San Jose’s Brenda Shanahan, 29, took second in 18:37, and Davis’ Jane Russel, 63, followed in 18:42 for third. Santa Cruz’s Avery McDaniel, 23, was the top local finisher in 19:56.

Rodney Cahill and Samantha Forde, both from Santa Cruz, were the fastest swimmers wearing setsuits.

Cahill, 51, finished in 27:39, and was followed by Danville’s Brian Stansell, 74, in 27:48, and Pacific Grove’s Bill Clausen, 81, in 32:04. Clausen, 81, was the oldest competitor in the field.

Forde,  54, was the fastest woman in 21:58. Emilie Cate, 52, followed in 29:49, and Santa Cruz’s Cecilia Shin, 52, took third in 40:26.

51st annual 1-mile Roughwater Swim: Campbell’s Trevor Gillis, 51, took first out of 189 swimmers in no wetsuit division in 18:33 at the 51st annual 1-mile Roughwater Swim on Saturday.

Clark Wakeland, 26, of Austin Texas, was second in 18:49. Davis’ Brad Winsor, 55, was third in 19:13.

Menlo Park’s Nancy Prouty, 55, took first among the women in no wetsuit division in 21:07. Pleasanton’s Lissi Knell, 32, took second in 21:15, and Saratoga’s Lisa Hazen, 62, was third in 21:22.

Santa Cruz’s Stefano Profumo, 48, took first out of 73 swimmers in wetsuit division in 20:47. Los Altos’ Tatsuya Arai, 46, took second in 22:25, and Santa Cruz’s Mike Welles, 76, was third in 23:32.

Megumi Masuda, 53, of Tokyo, Japan, took third overall and was the top female in 22:46. Campbell’s Emily Luehrs, 42, was fourth overall and took second to Masuda in 22:58. Allison Mulliken, 43, took sixth and was the third fastest woman in 23:48.

European Swimming Championships: Aptos native Caspar Corbeau, a Dutch-American competing for Team Zwemfed, earned silver in the men’s 200-meter breaststroke at the European Swimming Championships at Paris Aquatic Centre in Paris on Thursday.

Corbeau completed the final in 2:07.78. Great Britain’s Filip Nowacki earned gold with his 2:07.70 finish. Austria’s Luka Mladenovic touched the wall in 2:08.91 for bronze.

Corbeau took second in 2:09.00 behind Mladenovic (2:08.85) in the second semifinal on Wednesday.

Corbeau also took eighth in the 100 breast final (59.48) on Tuesday and ninth in Heat 5 of 50 breast qualifying (27.35) on Friday.

Corbeau grew up in Aptos until he was 5 1/2, when his family relocated to Oregon. He still has plenty of relatives in the coastal town and visits often.

His mom, Shannon (Hocom), was a four-time Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League MVP in swimming and competed for UCLA. His father, Jim, swam for Cal and presented his wife into Aptos’ Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003.

Running

Race Thru The Redwoods: Los Gatos’ Alex Prushynskyy, 38, and Portola Valley’s Clara Leupold, 28, earned wins at the 56th Race Thru The Redwoods 10K on Sunday morning.

Prushynskyy took first out of 260 runners in 46:25. Aptos’ Brian Flight took second in 46:35, and Boulder Creek’s Elad Magidish was third in 46:56.

Leupold was fourth overall in 47:33 to secure the women’s title. Felton’s Azalea Groleau (47:57) took second, and San Jose’s Savannah Kari was third in 51:21.

Santa Cruz’s Lucas Crick, 10, repeated as the champion in the kids’ 1-mile race, which featured 55 runners, in 6:25. Santa Cruz’s Allan Cornejo Kelley, 11, took second in 6:38, and Felton’s Rio Groleau, 11, was third in 6:44.

The SF Mile: San Francisco’s Vanessa Fraser and her dog, Gigi, took first out of 33 teams in the dog mile at the THE SF Mile in the Presidio on Sunday morning.

Fraser, 31, a Scotts Valley High and Stanford University alumna, and her dog, Gigi, finished in 4:31. They finished more than 45 seconds ahead of the next team.

MMA

A1 Combat, Prospect Series 3: Ben Lomond’s Grady Cloyd, who trains at American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, fights in Urijah Faber’s A1 Combat Prospect Series 3 at DoubleTree Sacramento on Friday.

Cloyd (3-0), a former San Lorenzo Valley High lineman and wrestler, takes on Sacramento’s Lamir Mitchell (1-0) in a three-round light heavyweight bout on the main card.

The first fight begins at 5 p.m. Eleven bouts are on the main card. Tickets can be purchased on eventbrite.com.

The event will be streamed live on A1 Combat’s YouTube channel.

In the main event, Berkeley’s Dashiell Allen (5-2) faces San Francisco’s Amir Alnajjar (4-2-1) in their five-round lightweight title fight. Los Altos’ Nick Stemmet (2-0) faces Redding’s Eddy “Money” Herrera (1-1) in the co-main event, a three-round light heavyweight bout.

Beach volleyball

Manhattan Beach Open: Santa Cruz’s Wyatt Harrison and teammate Theo Brunner of Ridgefield, Connecticut, tied for 11th place at the 2026 AVP Manhattan Beach Open – Heritage Event on Saturday.

Harrison and Brunner, seeded No. 11, went 1-1 in the winners bracket and 1-1 in the contenders bracket.

They eliminated No. 5 Hagen Smith and Logan Webber in three sets in contenders action on Friday afternoon but were ousted with their three-set loss to No. 19 Alexander Harthaller and Diego Perez.
