The Cleveland Guardians face off against the San Francisco Giants for the first and only time this season, starting on Tuesday.

After a day off for both interleague clubs on Monday, the Cleveland Guardians host the San Francisco Giants to start their only series of the season on Tuesday night. Both teams are trying to avoid losing four of their last five games. The Guardians were leading the AL Central standings for much of the first half of the season, but have fallen to fourth in the division with a 60-65 record and a 29-33 mark at home. Cleveland is now six games behind the Chicago White Sox, who won three straight over the weekend. The Giants are in danger of falling into last place in the NL West standings, behind the Colorado Rockies, whom they lost a series to over the weekend. The Giants are only a game ahead of the Rockies with a 51-73 record, and San Francisco is 22-40 on the road. Cleveland should be the favorite at home to win this opener on Tuesday.

The Giants looked like they were in good shape to win the rubber match against the Rockies on Sunday, but ended up dropping 13-7. San Francisco held a 6-4 lead after the third inning, highlighted by a three-run homer by Rafael Devers. But the Giants could only score one more time on a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the fifth to go up 7-6. The Rockies scored seven unanswered runs from there. It didn’t help San Francisco’s cause that they gave up two three-run homers to Adael Amador and Brett Sullivan. That was the final game of the season series against Colorado, which the Rockies won 7-6. The Giants will start Carson Whisenhunt in this opener, who is 3-3 with a 6.11 ERA in 28 innings.

The Guardians also lost their rubber match against another NL West foe, the San Diego Padres, 5-0 on Sunday. Cleveland could not solve Casey Mize, who was a former division rival who was traded at the deadline from the Detroit Tigers. Mize went six scoreless innings while only giving up three hits. Cleveland was unable to earn any more hits after Mize exited the game. The Guardians gave up four homers on the day, while Tanner Bibee fell to 4-13 on the season, giving up three runs on seven hits in six innings.

The Guardians will start Foster Griffin, whom they acquired at the trade deadline from the Washington Nationals. The lefty made his first All-Star appearance this season, but struggled in his first start with the Guardians. Griffin bounced back to earn his first win as a member of the Guardians last week, beating Detroit and giving up only one run in five innings. Griffin is now 13-4 with a 3.25 ERA in 138.1 innings.
