It’s certainly a little early to anoint Elliot Lascelles as the Padres’ next shortstop of the future.

So let’s leave it at this: The 18-year-old began his professional career on Tuesday on the right foot.

Lascelles collected three hits in his first game at low Single-A Lake Elsinore in a 9-2 loss to visiting San José on Tuesday.

Among Lascelles’ first hits was a triple in his third at-bat. He had singles in each of his first two at-bats, swiped his first base and played nine innings at shortstop in his first professional game as a pro.

The Padres drafted Lascelles 60th overall in the second round last month and signed him for $2.8 million, an over-slot deal that was a bonus pool era record for a Canadian high school position player.

Lascelles was committed to Yale.

Center fielder Dawson Willis (.882 OPS) went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored and designated hitter Chris McHugh (1.098 OPS) went 2-for-4.

Right-hander Jesus A. Castro (2-4, 4.32 ERA) allowed five runs in four innings in the loss.

Lake Elsinore is 61-54.
