OAKLAND — A woman’s charred remains were discovered under Interstate 80 in West Oakland nearly a month ago, and authorities say they still haven’t identified her.
The body of the unidentified woman was discovered July 27, underneath the freeway near Hollis Street in Oakland, a short distance from the Emeryville border, according to police. Authorities say she appeared to have been burned in one location and that her body was dumped there afterwards.
The woman’s cause of death has not yet been determined but authorities say they’re investigating it as an apparent homicide. They believe it may be a woman in her 20s who was reported missing about a week earlier and was staying in another part of town. Investigators are still waiting for DNA and dental records tests to be completed, authorities said.
The discovery was made by a California Highway Patrol officer, as part of a routine inspection after an encampment was cleared from the area days earlier, authorities said. The CHP has declined to comment, citing the ongoing investigation.
