The Allegheny County Health department this week shut down an Indian restaurant in North Oakland for several health code violations.
Chaai and Chaatwala has a closure placard on the front of its building on Centre Avenue, signaling a temporary end to business operations after a failed health inspection.
The restaurant did not return a message left Wednesday.
On its website, the Allegheny County Health Department found rodent feces and a bug zapper near cooking equipment and food storage.
Inspectors observed food residue and grease on the walls in the establishment.
Other food storage facilities were not up to code.
Some sandwich prep coolers were storing meats at temperatures 16 to 24 degrees higher than the 41 degrees that are mandated, and food containers were damaged or left opened, officials said.
Refrigerators were deemed faulty, and a damaged sink made proper sanitation and cleaning of dishes impossible in the restaurant, the report said.
The restaurant’s water waste system was also broken, and sewage had been pooling in the restaurant’s basement.
As of Wednesday, the eatery did not have a valid health permit.
To reopen, the restaurant must obtain a new health permit, fix coolers and sinks, drain and fix the sewage system, clean the all surfaces and fryers, and remake a menu approved by the health department.
